Born: August 8, 1989 - Passed Away: January 11, 2007
Dear Lord,
Thank you for blessing Marsha and I with the enormous responsibility of bringing Doug into this world to raise. He was a beautiful, blonde, blue eyed, young boy, with a rambunctious spirit. He was truly a special gift from you Lord, and we are thankful to you for Doug, even though it was for a short time.
Marsha and I are sorry Lord, for not understanding that Doug and you both knew that he had so much to experience in such a short time. If we had known that his time here was brief, we would have understood his desire to push everything to the limit! Doug did everything at full speed. When he took his first steps at 9 months, he quickly began to run, so he could get to where he wanted to go quicker. He began to talk in full sentences at about 1 1/2 and has never stopped talking. He loved the outdoors and was always the last one on the ski slope or on his "boogie board" in the ocean in Ocean City! Doug had no fear of anything! He always pushed the envelope in everything he did.
Doug taught us many lessons during these 17 years. Doug taught us that family was most important to him. He loved his brother Rob and "whoa" to the person that threatened to hurt Rob in anyway. Doug loved his friends and he had many. He worried about all of them and it didn't matter if they were rich or poor, or what color their skin was or what language they spoke. Doug would give you the shirt off his back! Doug had a lot of friends but he didn't make many commitments because You and he knew Lord that his time was limited. Doug loved school, but didn't like the routine. Homework, sitting still in class, following the rules, was not to his liking. He saw those things as trivial and he wanted to hurry up and Marsha and I always tried to slow him down, to focus, and to be patient. Lord, we did not know time was running out, but You and he knew.
Doug went through some difficult times the last few years, but through your help and those of his friends and the love of his family he made it through those conflicts. He had so many people that saw the good in him; his teachers, and coaches, his doctors, and particularly Judge Bill Ball, Al Char Anza and Mr. Knight. Over the last six months Doug began to change. He started to slow down a little and he began to set some goals. Doug wanted to finish high school and he was a couple of credits away. He wanted to go to college and hoped he could go to SFA, and he wanted to be a lawyer. With his ability to argue, he would have been a "hell" of a lawyer.
Doug loved his Mustang and his music, which drove Marsha and I crazy. However, his favorite country song was "Mud on the Tires". If you saw Doug's truck or his Mustang, you would understand why that was his favorite song!
Doug got a job with Kingham Construction and he was so proud! He loved to work with his hands and Doug appreciated the responsibility they gave him. After several weeks on the job he knew everyone and had made friends with them all. Doug was a charmer and could organize anything! You name the event and he had a plan and would get everyone together. If a problem came up, he would go to plan B or C if need be. I'm sure he's trying to give you directions, Lord, but I'm sure you knew that and You needed his help.
If I may be so bold Lord, let me share a few things that You may have missed about Doug! Doug was a diamond in the rough and as he went along his journey he began to polish that Diamond and it began to shine brightly, just as his beautiful wide smile would light up a room! Doug had many who helped him to build that luster, but there was always one person that never gave up on him Lord, in good times and bad! She saw all that was Good in him and stayed by his side even when he rejected her, or when he was in his darkest hours. She was there for him just as you were always there for your Son. I loved Doug with all my heart and soul and I knew that he loved me, but the only true love of his life was his mother, Marsha. No one Lord could get as close to Doug as she could and he never let anyone, including me and Rob get as close. Lord, I know and I am at peace knowing that you will welcome Doug into Your Kingdom. Rob and I know that his free spirit that he had here on Earth is now truly free! All I ask Lord, this one last time, is that you send your Holy Spirit upon Marsha and all of us so that we may continue to do your work and keep Doug's memory alive until you call us home and we will all be together again.
Lord, welcome Doug home and introduce him to his Nana and Grandpa! I know that Nana will have his knitted sweater for him with one arm longer than the other and a hot apple pie ready for him! Grandpa will be assisting him in entertaining your flock. If you give Doug his angel wings, be careful because he will soar higher than the rest and try to more than he should to please you. But of course you know that!
Thank you Lord for all Your Blessings and for entrusting us with temporary care of Doug! We did our best Lord to love him and care for him. He is now in Your hands to make him the most beautiful Diamond in Heaven!
Love,
Your faithful servant and Doug's Dad!
